Ten Second Review
All those cute little citycars are all very well but they're not very practical are they? So what if you could get that kind of fashionable feel in a small runabout with a bit more space - something like Toyota's Yaris supermini? That's the thinking behind the Japanese brand's marketing of this model in 'Trend' guise.
Ordinary small cars must, today, be more than ordinary. Buyers want a little more fashionable spice in their superminis in the modern era. That's always been available with just about any compact car of course if you're prepared to make a complicated and expensive trip through the options list. But customers in this segment aren't prepared to put up with 'complicated' and 'expensive' these days. It must be affordably served up for them in a ready-made package. As it is in the car we're looking at here, Toyota's Yaris ''Trend' model. With this car, you get the spec you'd rather like but probably thought you couldn't afford with features like privacy glass, smart machined alloys and front foglamps all offering a sporty look. It's likely to prove popular.
Though the 'Trend' model looks sporty, there are no changes beneath the bonnet to get excited about. It's based on the sportier SR model in the standard line-up, powered by a 100bhp 1.33-litre petrol unit. This variant also gets slightly stiffened suspension for sharper cornering. As a result, the low speed ride is quite firm, but refinement is good enough to give the feeling of your being in something from the next class up. Rest to sixty in the 1.33 takes 11.7s on the way to a top speed of 109mph.
Design and Build
Beneath the visual frippery of this model lurks a sensible supermini. Pronounced V-sculpting of the radiator grille and eased-out wheelarches give the latest Yaris a studier, more purposeful look, and the chrome strip running along the boot combines with the small tailgate spoiler to carry through the slightly sportier mein. The 100mm increase in length over the previous generation Yaris has made a big difference to cabin room that you can most easily feel in the back; six foot adults can be accommodated with ease. The 286-litre boot (within 9-litres of a Fiesta) expands to 347-litres if you load up to the roof. Push forward the 60:40 split-folding rear seats and a useful 768-litres of total space is freed up. And at the wheel? Well, traditional instruments behind the steering wheel replace the binnacle in the centre of the dash of older Yaris models. And while it's certainly true that there are classier-feeling cabins in this sector with higher quality plastics, none is better screwed together. It certainly looks very smart. Apart from the redesigned multifunction steering wheel - and the clever Touch & Go multi-media system - the well laid out and ergonomically sound interior hasn't changed much. There's also plenty of interior storage space, and the decently-sized door bins can accommodate a decent sized drinks bottle with ease.
Market and Model
The Yaris Trend (offered only in five-door form) is priced from £14,570, which makes it only £250 more than a standard Yaris 1.33 VVT-i SR five-door. For an extra £1,000, you get the option of Toyota's Multidrive S CVT auto gearbox. Adding a healthy dose of visual pizzazz to Yaris's sharp appearance, the Trend model comes with blacked-out C-pillars which, combining with darkened rear privacy glass and contrasting with Pure White, Tyrol Silver, Burning Red and Decuma Grey paintwork, create a floating roof effect. This model takes the sports-themed Yaris SR as its starting point, adding the new Podium alloys in 16-inch form and a chrome tailpipe trim. The Toyota Touch & Go multimedia system with satellite navigation can be specified as an option. The sensory appeal of the cabin has been raised in details such as the shorter gear shift lever with larger knob, increasing the tactile quality that's also witnessed in the new centre console treatment. Greater visual appeal is achieved in painted trim elements and the use of ochre-coloured stitching.
Cost of Ownership
This model should prove frugal. The 98bhp 1.33 VVT-i Trend variant manages 52.3mpg on the combined cycle and 127g/km of CO2. It helps that this Euro 5-compatible engine has been tweaked for extra efficiency to power a Yaris that's 20kg lighter than its predecessor, boasting the slipperiest shape in the class and raft of economy-massaging systems including stop&start, a gear shift indicator (or 'Eco Driving Indicator' system of lights if you've opted for the auto). And Touch&Go incorporates an 'Eco Route' function in the satnav that plans the most frugal and planet-friendly route from A to B. Industry experts CAP Monitor reckon that after three years or 30,000 miles, this car will deliver between 39 and 42% of its original price. Insurance should be very affordable too, with a 9 grouping. Plus there's a decent five year, 100,000 mile warranty.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.
Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.
This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.
One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.
Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
