Ten Second Review

With its 208, Peugeot has developed an unusually smooth riding supermini which lends itself extremely well to a well-specified upmarket version like the XY. With an upmarket look and feel, there's something delightfully old-school Peugeot about this resolutely modern hatch.

With the purchase of a supermini come certain expectations. It's like a rigid set of rules that are hardwired into manufacturers and buyers alike. Naturally there's a limit on how big the car is going to be, but then it gets a lot more subtle. We also have a tacit understanding on how much they'll cost, how well they'll ride, how much equipment you'll get inside and how they'll make you feel behind the wheel. Customers have access to more information than ever before ahead of the moment they actually park their backside in a car. So it's refreshing when a supermini is launched that, while not blowing these preconceptions apart, nevertheless teases a little at the edges of the expectation envelope. The Peugeot 208 XY is just such a car. If you're not familiar with the XY badge, it stems from the 208 XY Concept car that was a highlight of Peugeot's stand at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and claims to represent both the X and Y chromosomes. I got that far before it all started to get a bit French on me. The upshot is that here is a small car with big design ideas.

Driving Experience

One of the most common excuses trotted out for not finishing small cars just like miniaturised big cars is the "it's pointless because they'll never ride as well" line and in the most part it's true. The Peugeot 208 is a small car that doesn't necessarily agree with that train of thought. There's a genuinely expensive feel to the way that it rides, with polished damping and accurate yet quiet steering which all serves to lend itself well to the idea of a luxury version. The XY is available with a choice of four engines. The entry-level unit, the 1.6-litre diesel e-HDi 92 FAP is offered with a choice between a five-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed EGC sequential box. Step up to the 1.6-litre diesel e-HDi 115 FAP and that gets a six-speed manual transmission and it's much the same story with the petrol cars. The 1.6-litre petrol VTi 120 gets the five-gear manual box while the range-topping 1.6-litre petrol THP 156 gets six cogs for you to drive the stick between.

Design and Build

The 208 XY is certainly an interesting car and the visual changes visited upon the XY model are actually quite restrained. There's a definite purple theme going on here with purple paint being the signature paint tone of the six colours offered. The 17" Anthra Mercure alloy wheels house feature a purple-edged alloy centre cap and there's purple overstitching punctuating the cabin. Should you choose a little more personalisation, Peugeot will sell you some extrovert roof decal sets. The mirror casings, the fog lamp trims, the window trims and the rear skirt bead are dressed in bright chrome and you get gloss black finishes on the quarter panel trim and the centre pillar. The passenger compartment features co-ordinated vents, touch screen housing, dashboard decoration, steering wheel insert, front and rear door crossbars while the metallic colourway continues with an aluminium pedal bracket and footrest.

Market and Model

Prices start at around £16,500 for the 1.6 VTi 120, rising to around £17,500 if you want the punchier THP powerplant. Go diesel and you're looking at just a tad less than that for the 1.6-litre e-HDi 92 FAP engine and you'll need a £500 premium for the EGC auto gearbox. The top of the XY line is the 1.6-litre e-HDi 115 FAP and that'll be yours for just over £18,000. All are heavily equipped with seats trimmed in cloth and Alcantara, perforated full grain leather on the small steering wheel, a large 7" touchscreen with extended connectivity (jack socket, USB and Bluetooth), and a six-speaker stereo. There's also a a panoramic glass roof, ambient backlighting, dual zone automatic air conditioning, speed limiter/cruise control, and an armrest for the front seats incorporating storage space. The XY also gets halogen headlamps, equipped with a latest generation light guide and LED directional indicators and daytime lighting.

Cost of Ownership

As long as you can stand the initial purchase price, running a 208 XY is not going to break even the most modest bank. Worst case scenario? Even the raciest 1.6 THP engine will return a combined fuel economy figure of 48.7mpg and emit just 135g/km of carbon dioxide. The 1.6-litre e-HDI with the EGC gearbox is a fair bit saintlier, managing to eke 74.3 miles from a gallon of derv while emitting just 98g/km. No road tax to pay, no chance of a gold-plated carriage clock on petrol station rewards points. The news is all good. The entry-level 1.6-litre petrol engine will prove popular and it's got enough about it that it's not just going to be used as a school run and shopping thing. Nevertheless, it'll average 48.7mpg and even around town can see 34.9mpg. Whichever 208 XY version you choose, you'll benefit from Peugeot's 3-year/60,000-mile warranty and Peugeot assistance breakdown cover.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
