Ten Second Review
Stung by accusations that its Jazz supermini is a bit optimistically priced, Honda has released a model that aims to give buyers better value for money. The ES Plus model replaces the old ES and adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, privacy glass, a driver's front armrest and leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear stick. It's only available with the 1.4-litre petrol engine though.
Honda is a car manufacturer with big aspirations. That's understandable when you consider the engineering excellence and sheer ingenuity that underpins this company. Yet sometimes those aspirations can run a little ahead of the actuality of their product range. After all, with no options included, you could conceivably walk into a dealer and pay over ?£27,000 for a diesel Civic or over ?£32,000 for a top Accord. Now think of the heavyweight talent that these cars would run headlong into at that money. If you don't want to hand over anything like that sort of cash, there's always Honda's supermini contender, the Jazz, to consider. It's a car that's incredibly underrated. What's more, Honda has improved the value proposition by replacing the outgoing ES model with an ES Plus variant that builds in additional kit. Is it enough?
Motive power comes courtesy of a 99PS petrol engine badged as a 1.4 but which only has 1,339cc of swept capacity, so strictly speaking it's a 1.3-litre. As you might expect, you're not going to perform any Type-R antics away from the lights with that sort of power output but the Jazz's body is agreeably light so it'll hit 62mph in 11.5 seconds and run onto 113mph, which is hardly glacial. The manual gearbox fitted to this car is a superb piece of kit. It's maybe not quite up there with those wristy shifts you got in the S2000 and the Civic Type R but it's leagues better than what you'd find in most very serious performance cars and it makes driving a Jazz surprisingly good fun. Visibility is excellent and the latest generation chassis is far more rigid than early versions. Aerodynamic tweaking has also helped reduce wind noise at speed.
Design and Build
The Jazz has quietly metamorphosed into something quite elegant. The ES Plus wears the latest family look, which means sleeker front and rear bumpers, plus bumper and air dam assemblies designed for genuinely effective aerodynamics. With a drag coefficient of 0.33, the latest model cleaves the air very well for such a high, squat vehicle. The projector headlights also give it a beady-eyed look. The interior benefits from a generous slathering of both leather and chromium which makes it feel a little more upmarket and the instruments feature orange backlighting. There's still the usual Japanese design crime of about 101 different character fonts visible but on the plus side, the dashboard materials have been improved no end. The ES Plus features Honda's 'Magic Seats' whereby the back seats can fold down in one fluid motion into the footwell with the headrests in place. Lift up the rear seat cushion against the rear seat back and there's a tall protected space in the rear seat footwells for items like plants. This model also gets rear seats which recline 73mms to increase rear passenger comfort.
Market and Model
The asking price is pitched at around ?£14,500, which gets you much the same gear as you got in the old ES with the addition of 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, privacy glass, a driver's front armrest and leather trim for the steering wheel and gear stick. That's on top of gear such as a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility and speed-dependent volume control. Safety has been a major concern in the design process of the Jazz. The car features Honda's ACE body structure which works to help avoid crash situations where larger vehicles ride up over smaller ones. Standard safety equipment looks very generous with dual front and side airbags, plus full length curtain airbags.
Cost of Ownership
Honda has worked at improving the economy and efficiency of the Jazz but the gains made aren't huge. Choose this ES Plus with its 1.4-litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox and the emissions are pegged at 126g/km, while fuel economy is 51.4mpg. That's not the best in its class but it's far from the worst. An Audi A3 1.2 TFSI is a bigger, heavier vehicle with 6PS more under your right foot, yet that will manage 53.3mpg fuel economy and 123g/km emissions. Granted, these cars aren't direct rivals but it demonstrates how Honda could do a little better with the Jazz - especially so given that the Japanese brandmakes much of its engineering-led product development. The Jazz has always done well in terms of residual values, largely because the mature ownership profile means that cars are usually serviced on the nose, driven sympathetically, cover low mileages and aren't destroyed by kids or borrowed by teenagers.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.
Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.
This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.
One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.
Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
