Ten Second Review

Even if you want to make an outlandish statement in your compact car, you probably still want to do so with one eye on the bottom line. Hence the sales success to date of the diesel version of Nissan's little Juke crossover. Now, the 1.5-litre dCi engine is quieter, greener and has more torque. What's not to like?

Background

Nissan's strategy over the last decade in shifting its model emphasis away from the established sectors and into crossover-inspired niches has proved extremely successful. First, the Qashqai blazed a trail, stealing sales from customers who'd otherwise have bought a Focus or Mondeo-sized family car. Then the smaller Juke crossover got in on the act, proving for many to be a far more appealing alternative to something supermini-sized. Over a third of Juke sales proved to be of the diesel version, which made the 1.5-litre dCi variant key to this model's success. The only slight drawback came with a set of running costs stats that could have made better reading. Hence Nissan's decision to vastly improve this derivative with extra refinement, greener emissions and lower fuel consumption. Making it an even more sensibly macho alternative to a supermini for youthful urban motorists.

Driving Experience

The diesel engine we're looking at here still puts out 110PS through the front wheels (there's no 4x4 option) but it does so far more quietly these days. Changes have also been made to the gear ratios. The 1st and 2nd ratios are a little shorter to allow sharper responses at low speeds. Drivers will need to make the most of this car's Nissan Dynamic Control system to get the most out of it. This enables you to select from three engine settings - Eco, Normal and Sport. This system now not only selects appropriate pedal sensitivity settings in Eco and Sport modes, but also limits maximum engine torque in Eco mode to 220Nm. In Normal and Sport, the full 260Nm is available, giving a 109mph maximum speed and a 0-62mph capability of 11.2sec. To look at the Juke, you'd think it had just come off a stage of the Paris Dakar Rally. The big wheels, extended ground clearance and body protection clearly hint at some all terrain ability but much of the effort that has gone into developing the car was actually focused on creating a sporty feel on the road. The MacPherson strut front suspension is tuned to optimise ride comfort and handling with a cradle-type front subframe included for extra lateral stiffness.

Design and Build

There seems to be a huge amount going on with the Juke's design but against the odds, the various elements do mesh together in cohesive fashion. The look is highly adventurous with two sets of headlamps staring out from the front end, vast bodywork bulges over the wheels and the striking dogleg roofline that slopes away violently from the top of the windscreen. The interlocking circles cut into the under bumper, the rear door handles integrated into the C-pillars, while the boomerang-shaped rear lights add yet more points of interest. The Juke is 4,135mm long while the majority of today's superminis dip fractionally under the 4-meter barrier. It's also 1,765mm wide which, again, is larger than most supermini products but not by much. When you factor the Juke's wide track, flared wheelarches, beefy bumpers and long bonnet into its dimensions, the expectation must be for an actual cabin that's somewhat less roomy than the leading supermini rivals. The 251-litre boot includes an underfloor storage area and 60:40 split rear seats help to increase luggage capacity. The design inside shows the same ambition as that of the exterior. The centre console from which the gear lever protrudes is modelled on the top of a motorcycle's fuel tank and finished in high gloss paint. The instruments too resemble a bike's, with twin clocks shrouded by heavy cowls.

Market and Model

Juke diesel pricing starts at around £15,000, this variant pitched at almost £2,000 above the equivalent 94PS 1.6-litre petrol version. Only 2WD is offered in this guise. Standard kit across the range runs to alloy wheels, air conditioning, a decent quality four-speaker MP3-compatible CD stereo, a Drive computer, a height-adjustable driver's seat and remote central locking. Bear in mind that base models don't come with the clever Nissan Dynamic Control System that's really an integral part of this car's offering. The best-selling model is expected to be the n-tec, which showcases new technology such as the latest Nissan Connect communication centre. As well as new navigation software and a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen, the system incorporates advanced features such as Google Send-To-Car, which allows an owner to plan a journey on their PC or tablet at home or in the office and then send the instructions to the car ahead of the trip.

Cost of Ownership

Thanks to a start/stop system that cuts the engine when you don't need it, stuck in traffic or waiting at the lights, plus a whole package of technical revisions that we won't trouble you with, the combined cycle fuel economy of this Juke 1.5 dCi has improved by 14% from 58.9 to 67.3mpg. CO2 emissions are also improved - from 124 to 109g/km. That's provided that you set the Nissan Dynamic Control System into its 'Eco' mode, which reduces engine torque to 220Nm.

PCP

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

HP

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Lease

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
