Ten Second Review
Intelligently designed, Skoda's improved and facelifted Roomster offers an unusual take on compact, yet versatile 5-seat family motoring. With an impressive engine range now part of the package, this Czech contender deserves a second look.
The Roomster's raison d'etre is to cater for the undecided. If a Focus-sized family hatch isn't versatile enough, a Citroen C3 Picasso-sized supermini too small, a van-based mini-MPV such as Fiat's Doblo too, well, van-like and a purpose-designed 5-seater mini-MPV like the Renault Megane Scenic too expensive, Skoda's hope is that the Roomster - now a little prettier and with a wider choice of engines - will fit the bill. It effectively defines its own niche. Name doesn't ring a bell? It's hardly surprising. Since this car was first introduced in 2006, sales have been modest to say the least. This is somewhat perplexing when you analyse what the Roomster provides - essentially the driving pleasure of a family hatch, the versatility of a supermini-MPV, the practicality and size you'd expect from a van with windows and all delivered for substantially less than you'd pay for a purpose-designed 5-seater mini-MPV. So why hasn't the Roomster sold better? Maybe it didn't look quite 'right'. And maybe the limited choice of engines hasn't helped. But both issues have now been addressed.
Despite its multi-tasking talents, the Roomster drives much like a modern, well-sorted hatchback. It handles tautly with a firm ride that only occasionally becomes jiggly over poorly surfaced roads. The steering is accurate and nicely weighted and there's plenty of grip available. The feel isn't especially sporty, but it's certainly a cut above most that's MPV-ish. Wind noise is low too, despite the constraints of what essentially remains a boxy shape. Up to now, a common rail 1.6-litre TDi diesel engine (available in 89 or 104bhp guises) has been the mainstay of the engine line-up and with good reason - it's the ideal choice for this kind of car: torquey, efficient and as responsive as you could reasonably wish for. Refinement has never been a strong point, though. So along with the facelift, Skoda has introduced a new, hi-tech 1.2-litre TSI petrol unit which is tested here in 85bhp in form and makes a far more tempting proposition, for the sake of an extra few hundred pounds, than the older 70bhp 12v 1.2-litre engine that stays on at the base of the range. If you can shake the piggy bank a bit harder, the 105bhp version of this TSI powerplant is well worth a look too, especially as it comes with the option of clever 7-speed DSG twin-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Sixty from rest in this variant occupies around 10s.
Design and Build
The Roomster's first spruce up see it with a redesigned radiator grille and widened 3D-shaped headlamps, intended to visually widen the car's front end and merge more harmoniously with the side profile's swooping curves and angular windowlines. Nevertheless, as Skoda say themselves, this is a car of two halves - or, indeed, 'rooms'. The so called 'Driving Room', the area occupied by the driver and front passenger, feels very much like that of a conventional family hatchback. Nothing too adventurous but solid and durable and the two-way adjustable steering wheel and height-adjustable seat mean it's easy to get comfortable. Great attention has been paid to practical touches like the double glovebox or the extra-wide door bins that can accommodate a 1.5-litre bottle and have elasticated straps that run along the top for holding maps in. Behind is the Roomster's 'Living Room' and it's here that the vehicle's van-like silhouette pays dividends. The roofline steps up, allowing the rear seats to be mounted 46mm higher than those in the front. This not only gives back seat passengers a better view but also increases the space they have on offer. Leg and headroom are both extremely generous and there's a light, airy feel to the space thanks to the large windows. The Varioflex rear seating has also been thoughtfully designed, with the rear bench divided into three separate chairs, all of which are individually foldable and removable, though the centre seat is rather narrow. In total, there apparently are over 20 different seating configurations. The 450-litre boot is very generous, too. Fold the rear seats down and the volume rises to 1,555-litres. If that isn't enough each of the 16kg seats can be removed for a truly van-like 1,780-litres of space: just as well that a 515kg payload is on offer too.
Market and Model
Prices range between £11,500 and £16,000, comparable to van-based mini-MPVs like Fiat's Doblo, Citroen's Berlingo Multispace and Renault's Kangoo as well as more car-like supermini-MPVs like Citroen's C3 Picasso, Nissan's NOTE and Renault's Modus. If you want your Roomster to come with a bit of attitude, there's a 'lifestyle'-orientated 'Scout' version on offer for a premium of around £1,000 over an ordinary mid-range variant. Whether you choose a petrol-powered Roomster - the 12v 70bhp 1.2-litre version or either 85 or 105bhp 1.2-litre TSI variants - or indeed a 1.6-litre TDI model with either 90 or 105bhp, you should find it to be decently equipped. All models come with electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat, tinted glass, a pollen filter and a decent quality MP3-compatible CD stereo - but there are a few mean omissions: the lack of a remote control plip for the central locking on the entry-level model for example. Safety-wise, every Roomster comes with front, side and curtain airbags as well as ABS brakes and ISOFIX child seat mounting points. ESP stability control however, is extra on most models.
Cost of Ownership
Naturally, you wouldn't expect a budget Skoda model to be that expensive to run and all of the engine options return good economy figures. If you go for the most sophisticated petrol model - the 105bhp 1.2-litre TSI with 7-speed DSG semi-automatic transmission - you'll still return 53.3mpg on the combined cycle and 124g/km of CO2. With its manual 5-speed gearbox, the 84bhp version tested here can't match these figures, but 134g/km and 49.6mpg is still very impressive. And both sets of figures are markedly superior to those for the older and less powerful 70bhp 1.2-litre 12v entry-level petrol unit: such is the pace of progress. The 1.6-litre TDI diesels of course do even better, returning 60.1mpg on the combined cycle and a CO2 figure of 124g/km in the case of the 90bhp version. Insurance figures are very reasonable, with Roomster models falling into groups 5-13 on the 1-50 groupings scale. Pan-European roadside assistance is included for 3 years and there's the usual 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.
