Ten Second Review

Based on the already parsimonious Audi A6 2.0 TDI, the A6 ultra goes a few extra miles, the uprated 190PS diesel engine being mated to a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, with manuals available to order. An efficiency improvement of fourteen per cent lifts economy to 64.2mpg, delivered with a CO2 output of just 114g/km. This version also gets all the latest A6 range improvements, including styling updates inside and out.

Background

Until fairly recently, car manufacturers have struggled to get our juices flowing with improved economy. We still go a bit gooey over a sleek shape and get goosebumps over big horsepower numbers but fuel economy? It's never really been a value-added sell. People who don't want to spend money on fuel tend not to want to fork out on the bits that car makers need to sell to survive. What has changed recently is that even performance cars are being forced to become more efficient. Efficiency has become a measure of how clever engineering departments have become and in this particular arms race, the customer has become a grateful recipient of lower fuel and tax bills. Audi has been at the forefront of this drive and in the A6 ultra model we look at here, focuses intently on improving efficiency without sacrificing the other qualities that as a brand, it has brought to the executive car sector. It's every bit an A6, but one that works smarter rather than harder.

Driving Experience

The efficiency figures of the A6 ultra are all the more remarkable given that the engine output has been elevated from 178 to 190PS and the CVT gearbox, usually a byword for efficiency, has been ditched in favour of a seven-speed twin clutch unit. Where that old A6 would gird its loins, consider its options and then lumber through 62mph in 8.7 seconds, the ultra shaves half a second off that time and keeps on going to a top speed of 144mph. Torque also increases from 380Nm to 400Nm, the latter available over a wider range from 1,750 to 3,000rpm. There's no quattro all-wheel drive A6 ultra on offer, so drive is directed to the front wheels. Given that it was fairly easy to overwhelm the front tyre's grip levels in the wet with the 178PS motor, you may well need to be a little more judicious with the punchier ultra. Like all A6 models, visibility out of the car is an issue, with chunky windscreen pillars and massive B pillars. The driving position is otherwise excellent, with comfortable seats and a multi-adjustable steering wheel.

Design and Build

Here, we're looking at the ultra model and a member of the lately updated A6 range, a line-up featuring aesthetic changes both inside and out. Revisions have been made to the single frame grille, the air inlets, the bumpers, the side sills, the rear lights and the tailpipes. Matrix LED headlights, incorporating clusters of LED bulbs which can be individually dimmed when sensors detect oncoming or following traffic to automatically divert their beams around obstacles, are optional. The interior includes a wraparound dash with low key but high quality detailing that follows Audi's latest design theme. Under the skin, there's much use of aluminium, which has kept the kerb weight down to a very reasonable 1,575kg - which is laudable for a diesel-powered car this large. All of this certainly proved a good starting point in the creation of this 'ultra' economy-minded derivative, which is offered to market in both saloon and 'Avant' estate guises. Subtle 'ultra' badging apart, you'd be unlikely to recognise this variant if you came upon one, given that it features the same predictable styling as less frugally-focused models. To refresh you on that, the short-ish front overhangs give the A6 quite a dynamic stance, helped by the low roof line and aggressively tapered rear. It's a very assured piece of styling, although not one that will provoke too much reaction. The interior follows a similar theme and will be familiar if you've given a pricier A7 Sportback the once over. A wraparound dash with low key but high quality detailing follows Audi's latest design theme.

Market and Model

The A6 ultra is priced from around £32,000. There's a premium of £2,000 if you want the estate Avant bodystyle. As you'd expect for this kind of budget, both ultra variants are well equipped. Subtle 'ultra' badging at the rear marks out this most efficiency-focused of A6 models and of course it shares all of the usual features common across the range. These include full leather upholstery, the MMI Radio Plus system with 6.5-inch retractable colour display and DAB digital radio, SD card-based satellite navigation, light and rain sensors, cruise control, keyless go and the 'Audi parking system plus' set-up with acoustic and visual guidance. The options list can prove a seriously wallet-denting place to spend any time. The list of optional driver aids includes a night vision assistant employing a thermal imaging camera to highlight 'warm-blooded' road users in front of the car, a head-up display projecting key information onto the windscreen so that it appears to float about 2.5 metres ahead and a park assist system which automatically takes care of the steering function for the driver when manoeuvring into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces. Other options include comfort seats with heating, cooling and massaging functions, acoustic glazing, supple leather trimming for the centre console, a 15-speaker 1200-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and a TV receiver.

Cost of Ownership

When Audi launched this generation A6 back in 2011, the efficiency numbers of the 2.0 TDI more than had the measure of the BMW 520d and Mercedes E220 CDI. Since then, BMW and Mercedes have worked at improving their efficiency figures and had relegated the A6 to the third step of the podium. The A6 ultra gets the Ingolstadt brand back on terms in this segment, achieving 64.2mpg on the combined cycle, compared to the 62.8mpg figure of the BMW and the 61.4mpg showing of the big Benz. When it comes to emissions, Audi is actually now able to take the lead, scoring 114g/km of CO2, compared to the 120g/km Mercedes and the 119g/km BMW. The ultra's performance seems all the more laudable given that we're comparing an A6 with a high-tech twin-clutch transmission with a pair of manual cars but the transmission is a key factor in the Audi's efficiency. Advances in the twin-clutch gearbox include further minimized internal friction, highly efficient oil supply and a centrifugal pendulum-type absorber that counteracts undesirable vibrations and allows low-noise driving at very low engine speeds.

PCP

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

HP

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Lease

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
