Ten Second Review

Less ostentatious and more family focused than your average luxury SUV, the Volvo XC90 will appeal to buyers intent on keeping a lower profile. Subtle styling tweaks and technology updates for the versatile interior enhance the already excellent safety credentials and user-friendly design.

Background

Volvo, it seems, takes exception to the maxim that you don't mess with a winning formula. The XC90 has been one of the Swedish company's biggest successes, but it's also a product that debuted in 2002, aeons ago in the motoring world. Since that time, we've seen all manner of new entrants in the luxury 4x4 market and Volvo has tinkered with the basic package in an attempt to keep the XC90 fresh. It's still a seven-seater. And it still isn't really designed for heavy off road work. A few years back, there was a facelift, measures to pep up power while reducing CO2 and the introduction of the sports-inspired R-DESIGN trim level, plus a wider palate of exterior colours, alloy wheels and options giving buyers more choice. The most recent changes follow a similar theme: a mild styling makeover on the outside, the latest comms and connectivity technology on the inside.

Driving Experience

Engines in the luxury 4x4 sector have a lot to contend with but Volvo feels that the XC90's lone 2.4-litre 5-cylinder D5 diesel tested is well up to the challenge with a peak output of 197bhp at 3900rpm and a meaty 310 lb ft between 2000 and 2,750rpm. This unit boasts a CO2 figure of 219g/km which, given that it's now available only in automatic 'Geartronic' form, is very good going. And it means that the D5 falls below the key Band G threshold for Vehicle Excise Duty, saving new Volvo XC90 owners a tidy sum in Vehicle Excise Duty over three years. You won't be buying this car expecting pin-sharp handling. If you're realistic, you won't even be expecting the kind of standards set by BMW's more modern (but much more expensive) X5. The main difference between this and the German car is the Volvo's rather vague steering, obviously designed around the needs of its core American market. Still, the response at the helm will be quite adequate for the needs of most family buyers and ride quality (a greater priority for likely buyers), while still not as good as, say, a Land Rover Discovery's, is still pretty comfortable. Does it go off road? Up to a point. There's all wheel drive, of course, and Volvo uses an electronically controlled permanent 4x4 system with a Haldex differential calculating how much drive should be directed to the rear wheels, typically anything from 5 to 65 per cent. There's also a better than expected 218mm of ground clearance and stability and traction controls. All that said, the XC90 is really only design for slippery campsites and towing.

Design and Build

Silver roof rails, a redesigned bumper bar in a matching silver and more crisply-styled, colour-coded lower door mouldings set the latest XC90 apart. Keen-eyed followers of the model will also notice the modified front and rear lights while the sporty R-DESIGN variants get upgraded trim and door panels and 19-inch alloys to go with the existing package of chassis tweaks that comprises stiffer anti-roll bars and dampers and speed dependant power assistance for the steering. Other R-DESIGN signifiers include quad exhaust pipes, a skid-plate, an R-DESIGN badge on the grille and rear view mirror caps in silk matt finish. To accentuate the sporty nature further and to create a sleeker appearance, the car is not fitted with roof rails, although these are still available as a no cost option. Inside the car the seats are covered in either off-black leather-faced sports with cream inlay or calcite with an off-black inlay. The R-DESIGN logo embossed on the backrest and the contrasting stitching aim to reinforce the interior's sporty appearance. Other R-DESIGN interior details include the leather-trim steering wheel with its R-DESIGN logo, aluminium pedals, specially designed aluminium centre stack and door inlays, gear selector and tufted dark sport floor mats with contrasting leather piping.

Market and Model

The XC90 comes in a variety of trim levels designed to offer incrementally more luxury or sportiness. Whichever you choose comes with the latest kit upgrades. The Bluetooth set-up now allows wireless music streaming from a mobile phone and a fiendishly clever smartphone app that allows owners to link with the XC90 remotely receiving data for fuel level and economy, when the next service is due and, not least, to track the car's location. The RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment system) has generous 8in screens and features an integrated DVD player, wireless headphones and remote control. An extra socket means it is possible to connect an additional DVD player or video game so the two screens can then be used independently. A Digital TV option is now available to supplement the RSE system. This enables passengers to watch Freeview channels as well as providing a cardslot that can be used for subscription services. Safety is another prime Volvo strength. Parent company Ford were, after the Explorer/ Firestone debacle, glad to hear that the XC90's innovative Roll Stability Control (RSC) system received the World Traffic Safety Symposium Manufacturers Award. Volvo has approached this thorny issue with a three-pronged attack. In order to prevent the XC90 going dirty side up in the first instance, sophisticated gyroscopically-controlled stability software steadies even the most radical lane changing behaviour. Should you hit a kerb or ditch and roll the XC90, it features a boron-reinforced roof to prevent the upper body deforming. Finally, the XC90 also features curtain airbags that stay inflated ten times longer than normal bags in order to ensure passengers are kept away from flying glass and insulated from doorframes during a roll.

Cost of Ownership

The D5's 34mpg combined cycle economy figure and 219 g/km of CO2 could be a whole lot worse for a luxury 4x4 that weighs over 2 tonnes, can accelerate from rest to 60mph in 10.3s and roll onto a top speed of 127mph. As the petrol engines have now been dropped from the XC90 range, customers wanting a little more pace will have to find it in the aftermarket but it's hard to imagine that the performance/economy balance the big Volvo strikes won't be fine for most. Insurance groupings are in the 39 to 41 bracket and the XC90 traditionally performs very well on the used car market where it's family-friendly design is still in demand. Residual values should be buoyant.

PCP

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

HP

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Lease

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
