Ten Second Review
The Ford C-MAX is a five-seat MPV that's the best in its class to drive, comes with a well-thought out interior of impressive practicality and - for most people at least - works best when fitted with a diesel engine. There are three to choose from, a 115PS 1.6-litre, a 140PS 2.0-litre and a 163PS 2.0-litre range topper only offered in ritzy Titanium X trim.
If you were to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and attempt to design the perfect five-seater family car, you'd need to address all manner of compromises. It would have to be big enough to fit family and luggage but not so big that it's too hard to pilot around town. It would need an engine with the torque to move a fully loaded car but not one that's so thirsty that the family purse strings were stretched to breaking point. It would need all the modern safety and convenience features that buyers demand but without pricing the car out of reach of wage packets that already have school uniforms and hungry mouths to feed. In short, it wouldn't end up looking too far off a Ford C-MAX diesel. This second generation C-MAX has been with us since 2010 and the key reason why it's proven so popular is that while it does all of the sensible things really well, it's also pretty good fun to drive as well. That combination has proved hard to beat for a multitude of rivals who've thrown everything they've got at Ford's family favourite.
The C-MAX offers buyers a choice of three diesel engines. Well, two and a bit if we're being picky. The first is a 115PS 1.6-litre TDCI unit which is ample for most requirements. While it's no ball of fire off the mark, getting through 62mph in 11.3 seconds, its 270Nm of torque developed at just 1,750rpm means that it never feels gutless. From there you can step up to the 2.0-litre TDCI unit which makes a healthy 140PS. This is usefully quicker, for what it's worth, getting to 62 in 10.1 seconds and running on to 124mph and is also offered with the rather lovely Powershift twin-clutch transmission which takes the pain out of city driving. At the top of the range is a tweaked version of the 2.0-litre Duratorq engine which makes 163PS. In manual guise, this gets to 62mph in a very brisk 8.6 seconds and develops a huge 340Nm of torque. That's more than a Porsche Cayman, in case anyone thinks you've grown old and sold out. With many of the suspension components from the Focus doing the job of keeping the C-MAX stuck to the road, you know that this is something quite special within seconds of setting off. Ride comfort remains very good but initial turn-in is improved markedly and body control is leagues better than the previous diesel models. Couple that with good steering and decent grip levels and you have a vehicle that after an initially unpromising start, emerges as something you'd actually drive the long way home from the school run.
Design and Build
The design of the C-MAX is pure templated modern Ford and that's no bad thing. There's the trapezoidal grille, the swept back headlights and the sharp line around the bonnet and the flanks. The C-MAX measures 4380mm in length, which compares to a standard five-door Focus hatch's 4358mm, so you're not buying a car that's going to be notably difficult to park. The design inside the C-MAX is bold and although the fascia initially seems a little fussy, it's easy to get the hang of even the more complex functions. In line with the other modern Fords, there's plenty of metallic detailing and the quality of fit and finish seems high. It's the C-MAX seats that will provoke the most interest, however, as the designers clearly did a lot of work on maximising versatility. The seats tumble down individually in one motion to create a flat floor, with 471-litres of space with all the seats in place and 1723-litres with them folded down. But is it worthwhile even considering an MPV without seven seats? Compared to a Focus, the C-MAX offers you an elevated seating position, far more headroom, bigger doors and a more capacious boot. It even stacks up well against its key rivals, offering a good deal more usable room than you'd find in either a five-seat Toyota Verso or a Renault Scenic.
Market and Model
Ford hasn't skimped when it comes to equipment with this generation C-MAX. Standard equipment on all models includes alloy wheels, air conditioning, leather steering wheel, Thatcham category one alarm, DAB radio/CD and Bluetooth with USB connectivity and voice control. What is worth bearing in mind is that a lot of what's new is reserved for the options list so make sure you're comparing eggs with eggs price-wise. The standard gearbox is a six-speed manual and unfortunately you can't get Ford's Powershift dual-clutch automatic with this 1.6-litre engine. Trim levels run from Zetec through Titanium to Titanium X. A wide range of safety features are offered, including a rear-view camera. Standard features on the top Titanium X version include a panoramic roof, xenon headlamps with jet wash, partial leather seats, heated front seats, power driver seat, 17in alloy wheels and a comfort rear seat system. This seating system offers the convenience of configurable rear seating to provide additional rear space and leg room. This Titanium X model is the only trim offered with the 163PS diesel engine, and prices there start from just over £24,000. The updated C-MAX also offers the in-car connectivity system SYNC with Emergency Assistance; and optional advanced driver assistance technologies Active City Stop, Lane Keeping Aid, Lane Departure Warning, Auto High Beam, Driver Alert and Traffic Sign Recognition. Customers are also able to specify Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Power Tailgate options.
Cost of Ownership
The diesel models really come into their own when you're willing to put some miles on the clock. If you want the C-MAX as a mere school run and shopping vehicle, you'd actually be better advised going for one of the economical 1.0-litre petrol models as they're priced so cheaply it'll be a more cost-effective purchase. Really leverage the economy benefits of the diesel engine though and you'll save big. The 1.6-litre TDCI diesel returns a combined fuel economy figure of 62.8mpg with emissions of 117g/km which is excellent for a car of this size and with this much torque. Go for the 140PS 2.0-litre and you're looking at 57.7mpg and 129g/km if you choose to change gear yourself and 144g/km and 51.4mpg if you opt for the Powershift transmission. Those CO2 differences might well be worth bearing in mind if you're thinking of choosing a C-MAX as a company car. The 163PS version of the 2.0-litre diesel is rated as having the same emissions and economy as the 140PS car. Insurance reflects the C-MAX's family owner profile, excellent safety and security record and low cost of repairs. The 1.6-litre model is rated from just Group 16E. Compare that to Group 19E for a 110PS diesel Renault Scenic and Group 18A for an equivalent Peugeot 3008.
