Ten Second Review
Near the top of the refreshed BMW 3-series range lies the 340i variant - the replacement for the previous 335i model. Both name and engine make their debuts in this top mainstream petrol model. Boosted by BMW's TwinPower turbo technology, the all-aluminium 3.0-litre six-cylinder powerplant makes more power and torque, uses less fuel and produces fewer emissions.
In the BMW 3 Series range, the 340i variant is positioned just below the M3, making it a flagship model in the standard 3-series petrol line-up. As with the previous 335i this car replaces, buyers get a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine but with the 340i, power is boosted to 326bhp. Performance is obviously the main attraction of the 340i. It doesn't have quite as much outright performance as an M3, but its list price and running costs are much lower, providing a more accessible way to experience a properly fast BMW. The 340i is also not as hardcore as the M3 to drive - the ride and handling are less performance-oriented and as such, it provides a more cosseting, luxury feel.
As with any of BMW's rear-driven 'Ultimate Driving Machines', how the 340i feels to drive is crucial. As usual at the top of the 3 Series petrol range, there's a 3.0-litre turbo engine using TwinPower Turbo technology and TwinScroll turbocharging, with the turbo integrated into the exhaust manifold. Both of these technologies provide better throttle response, an area where many forced induction engines struggle. Power is up to 326bhp, good enough to take you to 62mph from rest in 5.1s. There's 450Nm of torque spread between 1380rpm and 5000rpm Though a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, it's likely that most 340i buyers will want an automatic. Fortunately, the auto option is ZF's highly regarded 8-speed 'box. Though not as quick as a double-clutch unit, it is exceptionally smooth, which makes up for its marginally slower shifts. The many cogs make light work of firing the BMW down any road at serious speeds. Suspension and steering are two areas that have also received improvements in this refreshed 3 Series model. The suspension is now slightly stiffer than before, reducing body roll and increasing agility. The steering has also been optimised and benefits from greater precision, making the car easier to place.
Design and Build
It takes a keen eye to spot the individual styling changes made to the updated 3-series as only a few have been made. The key design theme seems to be to make the car look wider and lower than before, so BMW has revised the front and rear bumper assemblies with broader horizontal elements. The headlights have also been tinkered with, LED indicators now acting as eyebrows across the top of the light units. At the rear, the tail lamps are full-LED units with more heavily curved light bars. There is also a revised range of wheels, with rims up to 19 inches in diameter available as an option - and 20-inch wheels can be selected from the BMW accessories range. The cabins have had a similarly light touch applied to them, with a splash of chrome here and a high-gloss surface there. Other updates include cup holders in the centre console with a sliding cover and an additional practical storage area for items such as a smartphone, positioned forward of the cup holders. There's a respectable amount of rear legroom for what remains a manageably-sized car. The saloon's luggage bay still measures 480-litres - or there's the Touring estate version with 495-litres.
Market and Model
Prices for the 340i vary between just over £38,000 for a 6-speed manual and around £39,500 for one equipped with the 8-speed sport automatic gearbox. That's for the saloon: there's a Touring estate version available at a £1,100 premium. The M-Sport package is standard and includes various choices of interior trim, 18" wheels, sat-nav and Dakota leather, though as always, there are many options to improve each of these. An option, the more enthusiastic driver will likely be interested in is the M Sport Plus package, it includes a choice of 19" wheels, LED headlights, M Sport brakes featuring 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rears, plus a Harmon/Kardon Loudspeaker surround sound system. Costing over £2,500, the package is by no means cheap, but the equipment included makes it excellent value for money and may help the car retain its value better. The 340i goes into a highly competitive segment with the likes of Jaguar, Mercedes and Audi as rivals. Currently, Audi and Jaguar both have models similar to the BMW in the S4 and XE-S respectively, they cost around £2,000 more but both sport forced-induction 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines. Mercedes' 362bhp C450 AMG Sport model is also comparable.
Cost of Ownership
BMW has concentrated on improving the efficiency of the 3 Series and there are benefits right across the board, even in this petrol 340i variant. This manages 36.7mpg on the combined cycle and 179g/km of CO2. You can do substantially better than that if you opt for the 8-speed automatic version. Here, the figures improve to 41.5mpg and 159g/km. Insurance is group 38. It helps here that the Steptronic automatic transmission option features a coasting mode so that when the driver lifts off the throttle at higher speeds, for example on a gentle downhill grade on the motorway, the engine is automatically decoupled from the powertrain. It then simply ticks over in neutral, which saves fuel and ensures there is no unwanted engine braking at high speed. An additional fuel-saving feature, which also improves driving comfort, is the new Proactive Driving Assistant, which uses information from the navigation system to "anticipate" upcoming roundabouts, corners and junctions and select exactly the right time to change gear.

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.
Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.
This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.
One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.
Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
