Ten Second Review

It's been around a while, but there are still many buyers who hold a strong loyalty to the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Understandably too, as it's one of the few affordable 4x4 that can still do the business off road. This latest car gets a bit more polish inside, the diesel engine tweaked for efficiency and some superficial exterior styling updates.

Background

Suzuki has been selling the Vitara and Grand Vitara models for over twenty years in the UK. Every few years it polishes the product a little, changing a few details and updating certain aspects but there's always been a lingering doubt that this vehicle has never really been designed with British sensibilities in mind. It always seems to miss the mark in terms of overall appeal, not by much but by enough to see it demoted in the sales charts by vehicles that, on paper at least, seem far less talented. Fortunately, now Suzuki can let the Grand Vitara really concentrate on what it's good at. The development of the more refined SX-4 SUV frees up the Grand Vitara from having to become too metrosexual. Still, a little wash and brush up here and there keeps a hardcore of buyers interested. For them, there's little that can touch the Grand Vitara's blend of abilities at this price and you have to concede they have a point.

Driving Experience

Aside from a few efficiency improvements, Suzuki has left the oily bits well alone. The Grand Vitara remains far more capable in the rough than a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CR-V and it's not difficult to see why. The four-wheel-drive system is geared towards off-road rather than wet road traction and ground clearance is far better. The flipside of this is that the steering and chassis never feel so responsive on the road. The Grand is somewhat bouncy over poorly surfaced-roads bumps, rolls quite markedly mid-corner and isn't the last word in engine refinement. Strangely, however, it's still good fun to drive with a rugged charm that you find yourself growing to like. The 1.9 litre DDiS diesel engine is a little noisy at times but its combination of fuel economy and low down muscle make it the most desirable choice. It's a shame you can only get it in the five-door cars. The diesel takes 13.2s to reach 62mph from a standstill but the 2.4-litre petrol engine is rather more adroit when you drop the throttle, achieving a 11.7s time. No Grand Vitara is what you could call quick, so the affordable 1.6-litre petrol unit might also make sense for some buyers. It's only fitted to the three-door car though. The Grand Vitara features a tough, built-in ladder frame chassis and independent suspension for all four wheels. The stiff underpinnings allow the permanent four-wheel-drive transmission system to extract maximum traction from the terrain while keeping the vehicle stable.

Design and Build

You've probably already noticed the redesigned front grille on the latest Grand Vitara. It looks as if Suzuki's designers have had a picture of a Lamborghini Gallardo pinned to the studio wall and its influence has seeped in by osmosis. Still, there are worse inspirations. The front fog lights are now punched deep into the angled recesses. Additional changes include inner headlight black accents on 5 door SZ5 models, and restyled 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels. By customer demand, a temporary use 16 inch spare wheel with 225/70 tyre has now been included as standard, which might well be the first time that infernal puncture repair goo has been replaced by something genuinely useful. Besides, it reintroduces what always was a Vitara trademark, the spare wheel on the rear door. The downside? As the spare wheel is mounted on the rear door the Grand Vitara grows in length by 200mm on five door models and by 170mm on the three door cars.

Market and Model

The Grand Vitara model range is actually fairly easily to get a handle on. The three-door car can be ordered in petrol guise only which helps to keep its prices down. There's the 1.6-litre 105bhp engine and the 164bhp 2.4-litre unit which is available as a manual or with an automatic gearbox. The 2.4-litre engine is offered with the five-door car too but alongside it is the 1.9-litre DDiS diesel. There are SZ3, SZ4 and SZ5 trim levels, with all models including electric front windows, climate control air-conditioning, front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP stability control and a 6 CD stereo. SZ5 five-door models are now equipped with an excellent 6.1 inch touchscreen Colour Navigation System. The navigation system is powered by Garmin and includes comprehensive European mapping with downloadable updates and content. The navigation system forms part of the infotainment centre - allowing a number of music options; CD, radio, SD card, media player (including iPod and iPhone) connected via the USB port, as well as via Bluetooth music streaming and phone connectivity. Rivals aren't too thick on the ground if you're looking for a 4x4 with similar pricing that can cope off-road as well as the Grand Vitara but there are numerous options if, like most customers, you prioritise road-going performance. Smaller crossover 4x4s like the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Qashqai and Mitsubishi ASX could be less rugged alternatives to the three-door cars. The five-door models go up against the Nissan X-Trails, Toyota RAV4s and Mitsubishi Outlanders but look affordable in that company.

Cost of Ownership

The most popular 1.9 DDiS models have benefited from having their emissions control system revised, resulting in a CO2 cut from 179 to 174g/km. This means the VED band for the 1.9 DDiS engine has been reduced by one band. An additional benefit of this is an improvement in combined fuel economy to 42.8mpg from 41.5mpg. Meanwhile, the very low upfront price and perceived benefit of the diesel engine should prop up residuals very nicely. All Suzuki models are covered by Suzuki Shield, a three year/60,000 mile warranty and also by Suzuki Assistance which provides 24-hour UK and European roadside assistance, recovery and associated services for 36 months. Factor in a 12 year anti-perforation warranty and you've got belt and braces protection on the Grand Vitara. Figure on Group 14 insurance and you should get a handle on what sort of premiums you'll be paying.

PCP

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

HP

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Lease

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
